LIGHTSCAPE / SNOWSCAPE
Commissionned for the Manitoba Room of Canada House in London, this artwork was derived from a series of photographs I took on a walk through my neighbourhood one winter. Freshly fallen snow serves as a pristine canvas for the play of light and shadow. What could seem like a dull, empty expanse comes alive as the sun moves through the sky. The bright midday sun creates crisp forms on the snowy carpet and casts an ethereal glow in soothing shades of blue-violet. In our northern winters the atmosphere and the sky-space become charged, the landscape becomes simpler and purer, and both lighting and shadows become more prominent. The winter landscape is a simple one yet there is much to see if we make the effort to look.
